DeMarcus Cousins tampaknya sudah menerima kenyataan bahwa dirinya tidak lagi punya tempat di NBA. Mantan bintang Sacramento Kings tersebut memang tidak pensiun dari bola basket, tapi sudah menutup pintu untuk kembali ke NBA. Meski Cousins yakin bahwa dirinya salah satu pemain besar terbaik di liga tersebut.
Ada hal yang membuatnya kini merasa lebih nyaman. Karena sudah melepaskan beban pikiran selama ini. Targetnya untuk kembali ke NBA membuat Cousins harus menjalani masa-masa sulit. Dalam sebuah wawancara dengan Cyro Asseo de Choch dari Hoopshype, Cousins menjelaskan alasan dirinya bisa menerima kenyataan bahwa kariernya di NBA telah berakhir.
“Anda tahu, 12 tahun saya di liga adalah sebuah babak kecil dalam hidup saya. Dan, saya siap untuk melanjutkan ke tahun berikutnya dan melihat apa yang akan terjadi pada saya,” ujar Cousins.
“Saya tahu saya pernah menjalani masa-masa saya di sana (NBA). Anda tahu, ada suatu titik di mana saya berusaha mewujudkan hal itu. Tapi tempat saya berada dalam hidup saya sekarang, dengan semua yang saya alami, di luar dari bola basket, sepertinya saya berada dalam kondisi yang baik. Jadi, seperti yang saya katakan, saya bersemangat dengan apa yang saya miliki di masa depan dan masa depan saya.”
Cousins terakhir kali bermain di NBA pada musim 2021-2022. Dia memulai musim itu dengan Milwaukee Bucks, sebelum dibebaskan dari kontraknya. Denver Nuggets lantas memberinya kontrak 10 hari pada Januari 2022, menyatukannya kembali dengan Michael Malone. Dia tampil dalam 36 pertandingan untuk Nuggets antara musim reguler dan playoff.
Pemain berusia 33 tahun ini bermain 12 musim di NBA dengan tujuh tim berbeda dari 2010-2011 hingga 2021-2022. Dia masuk dalam tim All-Star dalam empat tahun berturut-turut dari 2014-2015 hingga 2017-2018.
Cousins menandatangani kesepakatan dengan Taiwan Beer Leopards pada bulan Desember 2023. Dia bergabung dengan klub selama empat pertandingan pada bulan Januari 2024, tetapi saat ini belum ada indikasi apakah dia akan kembali sebelum musim reguler berakhir.
