The head of a military coup in Myanmar has taken over as prime minister
Yangon: Myanmar’s army chief Min Aung Hlaing has extended the country’s state of emergency and become prime minister.
According to the international news agency, the army chief who led the military coup in Myanmar had extended the state of emergency in the country until August 2023 and appointed himself the prime minister of the interim government.
After the military coup in February, an executive council was set up to run the country’s affairs, with some modifications to the interim government, and Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing himself took over as prime minister.
In a televised address to the nation, the Myanmar army chief announced his intention to become prime minister, promising to hold free and fair elections soon, but did not give a date.
In his speech, Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing called the former ruling party a terrorist and accused it of rigging elections and forming a one-party government.
It may be recalled that Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing overthrew the democratic government on February 29, while ruling Aung San Suu Kyi was detained and promised to hold elections within a year.
It should be noted that the doctors of Rangoon hospital were the first to raise their voices against the military coup in the country and a series of demonstrations continued across the country. More than 2,000 people have been killed and more than 5,000 injured since orders were issued to crack down on protesters, while thousands of political activists have been arrested.
