Brian Lara: Was the West Indies batsman’s record of 400 runs based on ‘selfishness’?
When the England cricket team arrived in Antigua for the fourth Test in April 2004, it was clear to captain Michael Vaughan that the West Indies had to make a clean sweep of the four-match series by losing the match as well.
In the last three Tests, England did not give the West Indies a chance to take over, but most importantly, the star batsman and captain Brian Lara appeared to be completely under the control of the England bowlers. He was able to score only 100 runs in six innings and twice in those six innings he was suffering from zero humiliation. His captaincy was at stake.
When Brian Lara won the toss at the Antigua Recreation Ground on April 10, it was widely believed that Steve Harmison and his fellow bowlers would be able to easily beat the rival batsmen as in the first three Tests. That this match is going to be a new history of Test cricket.
